Titled Selected Issues in Sport-Related Concussion (SRC/ Mild Traumatic Brian Injury) for the Team Physician: A Consensus Statement, this paper serves as an update to the 2011 consensus statement on concussion. An internationally recognized clinical psychoneurologist and concussion expert joined the team physicians this year to help write the 2020 statement on sport-related concussion. The alliance met in Phoenix, Arizona, in February to continue their work and develop the next consensus statement. The resulting document serves as guidance and teaching tools for physicians working in the sports medicine field, regardless of geographical location or level of team or athlete. The group meets annually to produce a consensus statement, which is a blend of research evidence and expert consensus. The project-based alliance includes representatives from the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine. Science Spotlight: 22nd Team Physician Consensus Conference and StatementĪn executive committee of ACSM representatives–Stan Herring, M.D., FACSM W. Aging and exercise independently increase circulating FGF21 concentration, implying the potential role of FGF21 as a mediator of exercise and age-related impairment in glucose regulation. The glucoregulatory effects of FGF21 were suggested to be mediated by adiponectin in animal models and patients with chronic disease. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is an endocrine hormone produced mainly by the liver and is associated with improvements in glucose regulation through insulin sensitization and the moderation of gluconeogenesis. However, there is no consensus on the mechanisms that mediate the positive effects of regular exercise training on glucose regulation.Īge and sedentary lifestyle are independent risk factors for pre-diabetes and T2DM. It is well established that habitual moderate- or higher-intensity exercise is effective for preventing and reversing glucose dysregulation. The T2DM prevalence is projected to double globally to 366 million by 2030. People with Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) have greater risk of serious health problems and have substantially higher health care expenditures.
